The most powerful stories are true stories. Gord Downie's Secret Path follows the story of a young Indigenous boy, Chanie Wenjack, who died trying to escape the Cecilia Jeffrey Residential School near Kenora, ON. Chanie fled the school in hopes of returning home 400 miles away. He never made it.
Inspired by this story and Gord's humility, sincerity, and determination to tell the story of all youths from the residential school era who never made it home, Leanne Mackle of Rescue Designs created this one-of-a kind piece, called "Isolation", which includes an abstract Ojibwe Thunderbird to highlight the isolation that exists in our northern Aboriginal communities.
In celebration of the release of Secret Path, we are thrilled to add this unique artwork to the Courage For Gord Online Auction. Please note that Saturday October 22, 2016 is the 50th anniversary of Chanie Wenjack's death. We will temporarily suspend the online auction that day as a way to commemorate his life and honour the solemnity of this occasion.
